At the beginning of April, the repair works for 200 m2 of the green roof of the Ronda Mercè kinder garden in Lleida were completed. The works consisted of:
- Removing the irrigation circuit, and the different layers of the green roof, including gravel, plant soil, and residual plants
- Disassemblement of the water drainage arches
- Assessment of the waterproofing and insulation of the roof
- Revision of the waterproofing and insulation sheet
- Installation of the new technical layers of the green roof system (from bottom to top):
- Steam Barrier
- Draining Layer
- Water distribution blanket
- Irrigation circuit with self-compensating drippers
- 15 cm layer of substrate, specific for green roofs
- Extensive vegetation layer using Sedum sp tepe (minimum 8 cm), a genus of succulent plants of the Crassulaceae family, very adapted to drought. The good performance of S. acre, S. album, S. sexangulare and S. spurium stand out.
- Installation of three new drainage arches
The Ronda Mercè building was incorporated into the project as a case study (number 2) because it was a failed green roof due to a lack of maintenance and monitoring. The repair has been carried out with an approach that uses efficient gardening techniques in the use of water, and from now on, continuous maintenance and monitoring will be carried out, involving the different stakeholders.
Thanks to this partial repair, carried out within the framework of the BIG4LIFE project, it is expected that the new green roof will be viable in the long term and will once again provide its environment with services such as the thermal insulation of the building, the improvement of air quality, and providing refuge for biodiversity, among others.
