Monitoring the impact of Green Roofs on urban air quality

Adding greenery to urban environments can help improve the overall wellbeing of urban dwellers. But how much exactly are plants contributing to improve air quality?

BIG4LIFE has installed sensors on the green roof of the URBASER building (pilot case BIG5) to monitor the air quality of the area. The sensors installed allow for the continuous recording of parameters such as carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), sulfur dioxide (SO2), volatile organic components (VOCs), and and atmospheric particulate matter (PM).

The equipment has been installed on the green roof and on an equivalent “conventional roof” (without vegetation) finished with Catalan tiles, so that the contribution of vegetation to the improvement of air quality in urban environments can be measured.
